Event Recap: Allianz Field Sustainability Tour
On a sunny day in June, the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN) hosted a tour with the Minnesota United Football Club (MNUFC) at the new Allianz Field Stadium.
The tour focused on the environmental efforts MNUFC undertook before, during, and after construction of the stadium in 2019.
Situated on a remediated brownfield adjacent to the Green Line Light Rail, WEN tour goers were made aware of the intentional placement and efficient building design of the stadium. Other subtle features were pointed out along the tour, including well-labeled trash, recycling, and compost stations, and the stadium’s PTFE mesh exterior that was deemed by the Audubon Society as bird safe.
WEN was especially impressed by Allianz Field’s stormwater reuse system. The group learned about how the stadium’s sloped roof can funnel rainwater into a holding tank with capacity for 675,000 gallons. This water is then recycled and reused throughout the stadium grounds.
In addition to learning about MNUFC’s commitment to sustainability, WEN friends enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look into the locker room and field-level access points. Who knew soccer could be so fun and sustainable!
