Event Recap: The Psychology of Sustainable Behavior

Our September event, The Psychology of Sustainable Behavior, featured Dr. Christie Manning, who has spent the last 12 years researching what it will take to move our world toward sustainability. In her talk she shared insights from psychology on how to create conditions that awaken awareness and encourage behavior change. She discussed barriers that keep so many of us stuck in unsustainable patterns, and pointed out the ways that we each can build bridges toward meaningful action. The event was hosted at the Conservation Corps headquarters and welcomed 24 guests.

Dr. Christie Manning teaches in the department of Environmental Studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She teaches a range of courses at the intersection of Psychology and Environmental Studies, including Psychology of Sustainable Behavior and Psychology and/of Climate Change. Christie’s recent co-authored publications include a 2018 edited volume, Psychology and Climate Change, a 2017 review article in the journal Science, “Beyond the roots of human inaction: Fostering collective effort toward ecosystem conservation”, and a 2016 academic textbook, Psychology for Sustainability.

Stay tuned for our next event, which will take place in November and be focused on renewable energy!
